CHONG

2023; 3D Modelling, AR display

‘CHONG’ means caterpillar in Chinese.

As I further explored my relationship with nature, I discovered my fear of insects, especially caterpillars, so I employed various mediums to confront and intertwine this fear, using my body as a medium to challenge and embrace it.

Through a rhythm of facing and evading, I entangled my fears, emotions, and thoughts in the digital metamorphosis into “CHONG.” This process allowed us to shed the symbolic status of our identities, emerging as independent entities capable of redefinition.

We live on a diverse planet, whether it’s human or caterpillar or any other living creature on the planet, all of them have grown to be today’s look in order to survive, and I am no longer prejudiced against caterpillars after learning that their “ugly” forms also give them powerful abilities.

I started to modeling the combination of different creatures. I invited friends to write down names of some objects, then combined these keywords randomly. And finally I used the three-dimensional software to combine these chosen objects together.

One of the caterpillar’s three main features that scare me most is the colours. To help understand the anthropomorphic possibilities of human-caterpillar fusion, I used computer technology to generate 100 different patterns and projected them onto human skin.

After knowing that my brother doesn’t afraid the three creatures that fear me most (spike, leg, color), I invited my brother to join me in creating a world full of caterpillars. What would happen if they evolved with us? What would happen if we used caterpillar’s energy to evolve the world?
